Living with Risk; Coping with Uncertainty

This presentation, Dr. Karen Hurley focuses on challenges of BRCA that can contribute to anxiety, and coping tips for building resilience.

Dr. Karen Hurley, PhD, is a licensed clinical psychologist at the Cleveland Clinic, who has specialized for over 20 years in psychosocial issues related to hereditary cancer risk. She received her undergraduate degree from Bryn Mawr College in 1983 and completed her PhD in clinical psychology at Temple University in 1998. She has provided psychotherapy and consultation to hundreds of individuals, couples, and families facing hereditary breast-ovarian cancer syndrome, Lynch syndrome and other cancer genetic conditions. She frequently gives lectures to patient and professional audiences, nationally and internationally, on psychosocial aspects of hereditary cancer. She is a member of several national advisory boards, including FORCE (Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered), Bright Pink, Sharsheret, and the Cancer Support Community. In 2014, she received a Spirit of Empowerment-Individual Commitment award at the 8th Annual FORCE conference, in recognition of her work on behalf of the hereditary cancer community.
